CAO: Choosing a College Course for Leaving Certificate Students.

Are you finishing your Leaving Certificate and wondering which college course to choose? Don’t worry—you’re not alone! Choosing the right course can feel overwhelming, but it’s an exciting opportunity to shape your future. Here’s a simple guide to help you with your CAO application; choosing a college course that will be a good fit for you.

Step 1: Think About Your Interests

The best place to start is by asking yourself: What do I enjoy doing? Your interests can point you towards a course you’ll love. For example:

  • If you enjoy science experiments, you might consider courses in biology, chemistry, or physics.

  • If you’re creative, look into design, media, or arts courses.

  • If you love helping others, nursing, teaching, or social work could be a good fit.

Step 2: Consider Your Strengths

Think about the subjects you’re good at. This can help you choose a course where you’ll excel. For example:

  • If you’re great at math, you could look at engineering, accounting, or computer science.

  • If writing is your strength, courses in journalism, literature, or communications might suit you.

Step 3: Choosing Your CAO College Courses

Take some time to research courses and colleges. Here’s how:

  1. Explore College Websites: Check out what courses are available and what they involve.

  2. Read Reviews: Look for testimonials from current students or graduates.

  3. Visit Open Days: Open days are a great way to see the campus and ask questions.

Step 4: Think About Your Career Goals

What do you want to do after college? Some courses lead directly to specific jobs, while others are more flexible. If you’re not sure yet, don’t worry—choose a course that keeps your options open.

For example:

  • A general science degree can lead to careers in research, healthcare, or technology.

  • A business degree could prepare you for roles in marketing, management, or entrepreneurship.

Step 5: Check Entry Requirements

Each course has specific requirements. Make sure you’re taking the right Leaving Cert subjects and aiming for the necessary points. You can find this information on college websites or the CAO handbook.

Step 6: Follow Your Passion

At the end of the day, choose a course that excites you. College is a chance to explore what you love and build a career around it. Even if you’re unsure, remember: many people change paths during or after college, and that’s okay!
